In verse 2:223 Allah (swt) has says:
“Your wives are a place of sowing seeds for you, so come to your place of cultivation in any way you please and put forth (righteousness) for yourself. And fear Allah (swt) and know that you shall meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers,’
In this verse Allah (swt) has mentioned the word tilth as a metaphor for pregnancy. According to Islam, sexual intercourse with one’s wife is a sacred activity and its main goal is reproduction and continuation of the human race. Therefore, in Islam, marital sex does not have a frivolous aim of having fun or entertainment, but a far serious one.
Abu Dhar-la-Ghafari reported that the Messenger of Allah (swt) said, ‘There is a reward for you (even) with sex with your wife.’ The Companions of the Prophet (ra) asked, ‘O Messenger! Is there a reward if one satisfies one’s passion?’ The Prophet (saw) replied, ‘Do you know that if he satisfies it unlawfully, he has committed a sin? Similarly, if he satisfies it lawfully, he is rewarded.’
(Related by Ahmad and Muslim).
The farmer sows the seeds in his fields in order to produce crop. Likewise a man should have sexual intercourse with his wife with the sole purpose of having children from her so that the human race may continue on earth, according to Allah (swt)’s Command. The men are also responsible for raising children in an Islamic way so that they may grow up into high moral adults. In this verse Allah also reminds the Muslim men that they are answerable to Allah (swt) for all their actions as they are going to meet Him one day. So they should fear Allah (swt) and obey Him. Allah (swt) told the Prophet (saw) to give the good news of Paradise to those who feared Allah (swt) in what He commanded and prohibited.
Since according to Islam, marital sex is a practice primarily meant to reproduce, so the question of anal sex does not arise. There are many ahadith which substantiate this, such as:
‘(Make love to your wife) from front or the back but avoid the anus and intercourse through menstruation’. (Narrated by Ahmad and Sunan-al-Tirmidhi)
Narrated Abu Hurairah that, ‘Whoever has intercourse with his wife through her anus will be accursed’. (Book of Marriage-Sunan abu Dawood)
As far as foreplay in concerned, there are quite a few ahadith which dissuade men from indulging in sex abruptly, without foreplay. For example:
When anyone amongst you has sex with his wife, it should not be like birds, but slow and delaying. (Wasa’il-vol.14, pg 182)
Prophet Mohammad (saw) said, ‘No one amongst you should have sex with his wife like an animals, rather there should be a messenger between them. When asked about the messenger he replied, ‘It means kissing and talking.’ (Tahzibu’l-ihya.-vol:3, pg 110)
So we find that marital sex is subject to Islamic rulings and a devout Muslim should abide by them as they are meant for the betterment of both the spouses.
