Assalam oalaikum,
In verse 2:237 of the Holy Quran, Allah (swt) says,
“And if you divorce them before you have touched (had sexual relation with) them and you have appointed unto them the mehar (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of their marriage) then pay half of that (mehar) unless they (the women) agree to forgo it, or he (the husband), in whose hands is the marriage tie, agrees to forgo and give her the full appointed mehar. And to forgo and give (her full mehar) is nearer to At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness etc). And do not forget liberality amongst yourself. Truly, Allah is All-Seer of what you do“
The situation which has been discussed in this verse is that of a husband divorcing his wife before consummation of the marriage but with the dower being fixed. In such a case, it is the duty of the husband to give half of the dower, at the time of divorce. If the wife forgoes the dower then the husband will not have to pay her anything. Or else the husband can forgo half the dower and pay to his wife the full amount of the dower that had been fixed at the time of their marriage.
There is a lesson for the husband and wife in this Quranic verse that at the time of their divorce also, they should treat each other with the same compassion and beneficence with which they treat each other during their marital life.
